Why FarmSavvy?

FarmSavvy is a comprehensive Management Information System designed to record, store, and analyze data on agricultural extension and advisory services, empowering rural farmers with timely information. By enabling users across rural communities to access critical agricultural data, FarmSavvy supports informed decision-making through mobile phones, even in areas with limited connectivity. The platform provides real-time insights into weather forecasts, market prices, locations of periodic markets (Loumas), and nearby Agricultural Business Centers (ABCs) and Financial Service Associations (FSAs). Additionally, farmers can access information on agricultural best practices, vendor details for seeds and fertilizers, and regional radio broadcasts on farming techniques, creating a well-rounded resource that enhances productivity and resilience in agriculture.

Offering insights on weather patterns, optimal farming methods, and market trends equips farmers with guidance on the best times to plant, where to sell their products, and where to purchase supplies. In Sierra Leone, farmers face limited and inconsistent access to extension services and information, often lacking inclusivity and gender sensitivity. FarmSavvy bridges this gap by delivering free, vital information that empowers farmers to make informed agricultural and economic choices. The platform is completely free to use, requiring no payment or mobile credit for access.

Access to information on weather patterns, optimal farming practices, and market prices empowers farmers to make well-informed choices. A recent research showed that 62% of FarmSavvy users will increase profits due to the platform's market price data. Farmers will be able to reduce transportation costs and locate nearby agribusiness centers and financial services to aid in growing their businesses. Moreover, market insights can serve as a valuable resource for farmer organizations, helping them advocate for policies that favor producers.

Barriers like limited technology and infrastructure restrict farmers from fully accessing and controlling essential resources such as land, financial services, markets, and other support services. FarmSavvy empowers rural farmers to take charge of their agribusinesses, enabling them to make informed choices and negotiate more favorable prices. Paired with strong empowerment programs and leadership training, FarmSavvy also fosters greater farmer involvement in key decision-making spaces.

FarmSavvy facilitates collaboration among essential stakeholders, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) Extension Services, Local Councils, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that engage with farmer groups. This integration strengthens connections between farmers and their service providers, creating a foundation that can influence policy and decision-making at the district level.
